Five ways the job hunt is about to change One of the biggest workplace changes that will take place in the next few years is the way people are hired. So how do you get ready for the changes? Be a good candidate for one thing. But also, be conscious of how employers will start shifting to meet the good candidates, because you want to be right there with them. Here are four ways hiring practices will change: 1. Companies will make recruiting young employees the top priority. There is a massive shortage of workers beyond what anyone predicted. Companies were ready for baby boomers to retire. Companies knew they would rely on Generation X and Generation Y to replace those boomers. What companies could have never predicted is that there are other factors exacerbating this shortage. Gen X is downshifting to spend more time with their kids. So they are working fewer hours. And Gen Y is flocking to entrepreneurship and self-employment. Even those interviewing at companies are finding that travel and moving in with parents is more appealing than the jobs being offered. This means that the workers replacing baby boomers come from a much smaller pool than anticipated. And one of the most popular topics on the management consulting circuit is recruiting and retaining Gen Y workers. Companies have little idea how to do it, but they know if they dont figure it out, they will not be able to maintain their growth. There is a growing trend among young people who have honed their skills, and are good at marketing themselves, and have a clear sense of what makes a good job: They dont need more job offers. And among them, active listening is one of the best soft skills you can master. Capable of supporting you in your personal life and professional life, active listening is both powerful and versatile, and like any other skill, active listening can be learned and mastered. But why is this soft skill so important, and what actionable steps can you take to become a better active listener yourself? Why Active Listening Is Important These are just some of the areas where active listening can help you: Conversations and personal relationships. Conversations are two-way forms of communication. Active listening makes sure the other person feels heard and understood, and gives you more material you can integrate to your own In short, it can improve your relationships, whether you’re trying to get along better with your parents or you’re trying to manage a problematic employee. Empathy and understanding. Active listening also helps you understand people, including their motivations, much better. It gives you more empathy, which is a powerful tool in collaboration and management, and provides you with new perspectives on the world. The more you actively listen to the people in your life, the more open and compassionate you can become. Opportunities for feedback and openness. People are more likely to open up when they feel they’re going to be heard without judgment. Actively listening consistently to people makes them trust you, and makes them much more likely to give you honest feedback and/or be open with you. This is vital for learning more about your environment, and achieving more mutual trust with your employees, relatives, and friends. How to Become a Better Active Listener Active listening is a skill you can train and improve, rather than something you either “have” or “don’t have.” Try using these strategies to become a better active listener in your own life: Don’t interrupt or interject. Active listening requires you to devote your full attention to the person speaking. Therefore, your first step is to limit any interruptions or interjections to the bare minimum. Give the other person as much time as they need to articulate what they’re thinking, and don’t force your way into the conversation. To show you’re listening while they’re speaking, nod your head and rely on facial expressions, rather than using “uh-huhs,” or other forms of verbal communication. Allow more pauses in conversation. In many conversations, pauses are just as important as the words being said. When the other person is done speaking, wait a few seconds before you respond. This gives the other person more conversational space, and gives you a chance to think through a more thorough and engaging response. Similarly, don’t feel awkward when the other person takes a minute to think about what they want to say next; these pauses lend themselves to more thoughtful conversations. Ask thoughtful questions. After hearing what the other person has to say, or when starting a conversation, try to ask more thoughtful questions. Notice key elements that are being presented, or key elements that are intentionally being withheld, and frame them as questions. Questions give your conversational partner more opportunities to speak up.   Which makes them feel more heard and more valued.   And the more thoughtful they are, the more engaged you’re going to appear in the conversation. Acknowledge or reiterate what the other person says. There’s an old trick to repeat or rephrase what the other person is saying, and it works for a reason. Reiterating what the other person has just said in your own words shows that you’re listening, shows that you truly understand what they’re saying, and gives the other person a chance to hear what they’re saying in other terms, from another voice. It’s a powerful tool that leads you both to become better conversational participants. Tie each new thought to a previous thought or statement. When the conversation naturally starts to take its course, try to tie every new thought or conversational direction to something previous. Avoid bringing up new subjects out of thin air, or introducing topical changes on a whim. It ensures the other person has ample room to say what they want to say.   And, it shows you’re invested in the topic at hand. Like with most skills, active listening will get easier with practice. The more you challenge yourself to be better at it, the more natural it’s going to seem to you. Soon, it will manifest as the way you naturally communicate, rather than being something you have to work for. When that happens, you’ll notice a substantial improvement in your communicative efficiencyâ€"and eventually, your relationships

Stop Asking for Informational Interviews What Answers Are You Looking for? When you are at the point where you are ready to reach out to people, you have to know what advice you are looking for.   Do you want to know their thoughts on where your industry/occupation is going in the future?   Are you interested in the specific challenges a company is facing right now?   How to make contact with  people inside target companies? WIIFT Most people are busy and if they are going to give you their precious time, there has to be something in it for them. WIIFT (Whats in it for them!)   Your job is to find out what will motivate them to provide advice. Remember, flattery will get you everywhere. Much of what will determine your success in securing a meeting, see, I am calling it a meeting, not an informational interview, is based on how you ask for it and what you are asking for. Start With People You Know It is best to start off with people you know and get some experience under your belt.   Then you can move to referrals or those you dont know (cold calls). Gather Intel One way to warm up the coldest of calls is to learn something about the person first.   Google them.   See if they are on LinkedIn or Twitter.   You are hoping you can find them on Twitter because it is so easy to see what they are saying. After youve watched their tweets for awhile and begin following them. Thats the first time theyll see your name perhaps. They will know you are following them if they manually accept followers. You can send intelligent Tweets, sharing information is what I am talking about. Re-tweet their Tweets, more name recognition is going on. You could even ask them a question.   If they havent followed you back, thats ok, just use the @ sign. Most people will want to help if they know how they can provide some.   It is crucial that you clearly define the help/advice you are looking for and hopefully why. I am not suggesting that you dont ask for these informational interviews.   I am  urging you to call  them something else.

How to Get Over Being Stressed Out by Your Job So You Can Actually Do It Stress, we all know, can be a killer. It comes in endless forms, induced by family issues, home life, money worries and, of course, work pressures. When job stress hits, we can feel trapped in a vortex of negative thinking. We can’t concentrate. We can’t be productive. But for many of us, we also can’t escape: we’re at work and we have to stay there, negative thoughts or not. But it’s no way to get a job done. I spoke with Ora Nadrich, a Los-Angeles-based life coach, mindfulness meditation teacher, and the author of Says Who? How One Simple Question Can Change The Way You Think Forever. Nadrich works with many Type-A clients. After all, she works in the nerve center of pressure-cooker Hollywood, where stress and negative thinking are practically part of the job description. But as she says, they don’t have to be. “No matter what our careers, too often we’re filled with negative thoughts about our jobs,” Nadrich said. “Those thoughts can take an enormous toll on our performance, which just makes things worse. But if we can separate ourselves from our thoughts, they can’t own us anymore. And the most powerful way to do that is to turn around and challenge each thought directly â€" with pointed questions.” Here are four steps to separate yourself from work stress and negative thinking, so you can get back to work: Acknowledge the Job Stress. Work-related stress is at epidemic rates, according to the American Institute of Stress. Everyone feels it. First, recognize its existence, even if its upsetting. Dont try to deny it or sweep it under the rug. Admit you’re stressed about your job. Accept that your head is filled with negative thoughts. By doing so, you allow yourself to focus on what’s happening in the now â€" to be mindful of what is actually happening, instead of focusing on the emotions surrounding the thoughts. Shift into Observer Mode. Now shift gears. You need to step out of reactive mode, where you have no distance at all from your own negative thoughts and are reacting to them over and over. Shift into observer mode, where you become your own witness, separate and independent of all that stress. You need to be in that position to be able to ask yourself questions that help you become calmer and grounded. Ask that Negative Thought, “Says Who?” Think of this as disarming the intruder. By asking “Says Who?” you are demanding that your thinking reveal who is responsible for it. In other words, how did it get into your head? Once you find the source, you can decide what to do about it. Is it your original thought, or was it someone else’s that you took as your own? You may even discover it’s an old thought that has become part of your core beliefs. Now its time to challenge it and let it go. Nadrich offered this common â€" and extremely negative thought â€" as an example: “I’m terrible at my job.” So many of us are plagued by that kind of self-doubt at one point or another. But ask it, “Says Who?” and you’re asking yourself, “Why am I saying that I’m terrible at this job?” Then you can go take it a step further. Ask yourself, “Is it me? If so, why would I think a thought that makes me feel bad about myself?” Keep Asking Questions. Keep challenging those negative thoughts with more questions. “Each question plays a different role in defusing your negative thinking,” explained Nadrich. Asking, Have I heard someone say this before? helps you find out if the negative thought is your opinion, or someone else’s. Asking, Do I like this thought? gives you license to consider whether its a thought worth keeping. Questions like Does this thought work for me? can help you transform that negative thought into something positive and life-affirming. Thats the kind of thought that can help you get your work done again. Or, as Nadrich pointed out, “It may help you make the decision to find a job that’s better suited to you, and better for your well-being.” The truth is, achievement takes work. But there’s a big difference between aiming high and judging ourselves so harshly we can’t get out of our own way. So the next time stress takes hold, take a minute. Sit down, and focus on those doubts and worries before they wreak havoc with your emotions. Sometimes all it takes to get back on track at work is asking the right questions.
